※Hours are sometimes extended for special exhibitions.

Every Monday (If Monday is a national holiday, the Museum is open Monday and closed the following Tuesday.)
Year-end/New Year holiday (December 28 to January 1)

  • Ueno District will be closed for fumigation.  (The schedule for 2026 will be announced once it is decided.)
  • Please note that closing days may change during special exhibitions.

Nights for Astronomical Observation

General admission and university students ¥320

High-school students and younger Free

Nights for Astronomical Observation are offered from 7:30 PM on the first Friday of each month from April through August, and from 6:30 PM from September through March (Available on clear nights, for 90 minutes).
At Tsukuba Campus, Nights for Astronomical Observation are offered from sunset on clear nights, on the second Saturday of each month.
* Advanced booking is required.

Admission Ticket with Donation

※ Sales begin on October 1, 2025.
※ A portion of the ticket price (370 yen) will be donated to support the Museum’s research and studies, the collection, preservation, and utilization of specimens, as well as exhibitions and educational programs.
※ Visitors who purchase an admission ticket with donation will receive a small gift at the Information Desk as a token of appreciation.
※ Donation receipts will not be issued.
※ Those eligible for free admission and group visitors may also purchase the admission ticket with donation. In such cases, 630 yen will be treated as the admission fee and 370 yen as the donation.

 Visitors Eligible for Free Admission

The following individuals are eligible for free admission. Please note that free admission may not apply to special exhibitions, so please inquire for details.

Visitors Aged 65 and Over, and Under 18 Please present identification that verifies your age.
(*Visitors under 18 include those up to the first March 31st following the year they turn 18.)
Visitors with Disabilities Individuals*Visitors with disabilities, atomic bomb survivors, and war-wounded or ill veterans, as well as one accompanying caregiver per eligible individual, are admitted free of charge.

Please present one of the following documents (*1) upon admission.
(*1) Acceptable forms of identification include: physical disability certificate, rehabilitation certificate, psychiatric disability welfare certificate (disability certificate app also accepted), certificate of recipient of disability welfare services, certificate of recipient of medical care for independence support, certificate of recipient for day care (or residential care), certificate of recipient for specified medical expenses (designated intractable diseases), atomic bomb survivor certificate, and war-wounded and sick veteran certificate.
Groups*For group visits from special needs schools, social welfare facilities for people with disabilities, and similar organizations, there is a system for free admission. Please contact us for details.
Other MembersThis includes members of the Friends of the National Museum of Nature and Science (FNMNS) Membership, holders of the Repeaters Pass, Supporting Members, and students as well as accompanying faculty from universities participating in the University Partnership program.

Group Visits

  • For groups wishing to visit, please refer to the Group Visits page.
  • For school and similar group visits, admission is free for children and students, but accompanying teachers, travel guides, and other staff are required to pay a fee (630 yen per person).

*Teachers and staff accompanying school trips or off-campus learning visits are normally required to pay an admission fee. However, starting April 1, 2020, presenting the documents specified by the museum allows free admission to the permanent exhibitions.

Admission Information

  • Visitors wishing to re-enter the permanent exhibitions on the same day should contact the General Information Desk on B1F, Japan Gallery.
  • Admission is free on May 18 (International Museum Day) and November 3 (Culture Day). (Please note that this applies only to the permanent exhibitions.)

Request to Museum Visitors :Prohibited Actions inside the Museum

We may refuse to provide service or ask guests who fail to observe the following prohibitions to leave the museum.
  • Bringing pets (including insects) into the museum.
    (Service animals such as guide dogs, hearing dogs, and service dogs are permitted.)
  • Bringing plants and botanical items inside.
  • Bringing dangerous items or fire/flammable materials inside.
  • Entry while intoxicated (drunk).
  • Entry by persons whose attire violates public order and morals, or involves excessive exposure unsuitable for a public space.
  • Eating, drinking, or smoking outside of designated areas.
  • Any behavior that disturbs or inconveniences other visitors.
  • Making unreasonable or excessive demands of staff that lack justification, or engaging in abusive, insulting, or violent language/behavior toward staff.
Do not eat/drink in the exhibition halls.
Photography and filming
  • This includes photography and filming for personal, non-commercial use that does not interfere with operations or safety of the Museum and, infringe on other's right of portrait.
  • Do not flash photograph using tripods, unipods/monopods, Selfie Sticks, or other photographic aids, lamps or other lighting apparatus, and no group photos are allowed.
  • Please follow each instruction for Special Exhibition or Temporary Exhibition。
