Policy

Specimen Lending

The Museum lends specimens and materials from its collection to research institutions, such as museums and universities, for research purposes. We also lend specimens and materials to other museums and institutions for exhibition, allowing them to be shared with a wider audience.

Borrowing Procedures

While specimens are available on loan for research purposes, please note that all requests are subject to approval. The decision to lend is based on a review of the purpose for borrowing it, the applicant's institutional affiliation, and the condition of the specimens.

Contact Email:collection-center@kahaku.go.jp

Please include your full name and institutional affiliation when you contact us.
Please provide a brief description of the purpose for borrowing the specimen and how you intend to use it in your research. Please specify the type and number of specimens you wish to borrow, as well as any preferences regarding collection site, collection date, size, and gender.
If you wish to borrow specimens with specific catalog numbers, please specify them.
We are unable to lend out all specimens of a single type at once. As a general rule, we lend out half of the specimens at a time. Once they are returned, we will lend out the remaining half.
If you wish to perform a dissection, you must obtain permission from the staff member in charge. Dissection is permitted if a sufficient number of specimens are available.

Notes on Specimen Identification

As is the case with other museums worldwide, the sheer volume of specimens we manage places a limit on identification accuracy. Please be aware that the borrowed specimens may not be correctly identified. Please also note the synonym relationships for the requested species. Some specimens may be identified under older or different scientific names.
