Discovery Talks Discovery Talks are gallery talks in which Museum researchers discuss their own research projects or scientific topics of interest in the world around us, illustrated with related Museum exhibits.
Twice a day on Saturdays and public holidays
Nature Observation Tours Nature observation tours go outdoors to observe and sometimes collect things in the natural world, including plants, animals, minerals and fossils. Basic observation and specimen preparation techniques are also introduced.

Natural History Seminars Through lectures, practical instruction and experiments, these workshops teach special knowledge about natural history and techniques of researching it.

Chemistry Experiments Mainly through experiments, participants learn about chemical processes that are deeply connected to phenomena in everyday life. This course is especially recommended for those involved in science education.

Lectures on the History of Industrial Technology Participants study the history of the development of industrial technology and its relationship to modern industrial technology and living.

Lectures to Promote Interest in Astronomy Enjoy lively discussions of the latest findings in astronomy and space science, along with a grounding in the basics of these fast-advancing disciplines.
Third Saturday of each month
Nighttime Astronomical Observation Participants observe the stars visible in each season through the Museum's astronomical telescopes. Offered only on clear nights.

Lectures on Natural History for University Students Prepared specially for university students, these lectures offer a systematic course of study of the natural phenomena and natural history of the Japanese archipelago.

Lectures on Science and Technology for University Students This lecture series, aimed primarily at university students, offers a systematic course of study on the history of science and technology in Japan.
Six times a year
Science Communicator Practical Training Program Practical training is provided to develop "Science Communicators," people who can bridge the gap of understanding between the scientific and technical community and the general public.

Acceptance and Guidance of Museum Trainees For university students aiming for careers as curators, the Museum offers tours of the Museum with explanations of its operations, with opportunities to experience curatorial work at first hand. Participants can observe and train in the Museum's specimen warehouse.

Tsukuba Botanical Garden

Intriguing Facts about Plants The latest results in botanical research are presented in a clear, engaging seminar format.

Botanical Garden "All About" Seminars The "All About" Seminars are a comprehensive study course in which:
(1) The seasonal changes in native trees are observed year-round, and
(2) Discussions are offered on plants native to the untamed slopes of Mt. Tsukuba.
One theme is covered each year (two themes in AY2008). In AY2008, 12 consecutive lectures will be offered on theme (1) above, and 6 observation sessions on theme (2).
Observing and Drawing Plants Participants learn how to draw plants accurately through careful observation.
Once a year
Nighttime Astronomical Observation Participants observe the stars visible in each season through the Tsukuba District's astronomical telescope. Offered only on clear nights.

Botany Lessons for Beginners Observe the modes of living of plant life inside and outside the Institute for Nature Study.

Lessons on the Ecology of Small Urban Animals Observe the modes of living of insects and other small animals inside and outside the Institute for Nature Study.

Learning to View Nature from the Eyes of a Researcher (ecological training) Practical training is provided in the entire series of tasks involved in surveying species and populations in a given region, from initial survey intent to summary of conclusions. This course instills in participants the skills needed to study nature in the wild. Through lectures and practical training by researchers in the field, participants develop a discerning eye for the subtleties of natural phenomena.
