About Our Facilities
The National Museum of Nature and Science, founded in 1877, is Japan’s only national comprehensive science museum covering natural history and the history of science and technology.
The Japan Gallery was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2008. Built in 1931 according to a design by the Ministry of Education at the time, the building features a grand structure based on the Neo-Renaissance style. When viewed from
above, the building’s shape resembles an airplane, which at the time symbolized cutting-edge scientific technology. Inside this classical building, there are six exhibition rooms, as well as an auditorium and conference rooms. The central area is open
to the ceiling and features a hall with a domed roof. The charm of the building lies in its atmosphere of the early Showa period, created by its distinctive lighting fixtures and beautiful stained glass.
The Global Gallery had its grand opening in 2004 and features expansive exhibition spaces spanning approximately 9,000 m² across three above-ground and three underground floors. Impressive real specimens and dynamic animal taxidermy are showcased with
multimedia displays. The exhibition spaces where visitors can experience the history of life on Earth and the history of human ingenuity can be used for a variety of purposes, from filming to concerts.
