Methods in the Natural History of Marine Fauna
University Partnership & Ochanomizu University Joint Program (FY 2025)
This year, the program is scheduled to be held with accommodation at the Ochanomizu University Marine Biological Laboratory (11 Kō, Tateyama-shi, Chiba Prefecture).
Main Internship Curriculum
| 1 | Collection methods for marine animals inhabiting diverse environments (rocky shores, sandy/muddy bottoms, underwater, etc.). |
| 2 | Activities of a natural history museum, and methods for preparing and preserving research specimens. |
| 3 | Comparative morphology of deuterostomes: Echinoderms and Cephalochordates (Amphioxus). |
| 4 | Life history of marine animals: Using the sea urchin as a model, from larva to the pentaradial adult stage. |
| 5 | Life history and morphology of Dicyemida (Phylum Dicyemida) found in the renal sacs of cephalopods: Dissection of cephalopods and the life cycle of the parasite. |
| 6 | Taxonomic research of crustaceans. |
| 7 | Systematics and morphology of fish. |
| 8 | Deep-sea organisms of Sagami Bay: Focusing on sea urchins (echinoids), glass sponges, and crinoids (Lecture). |

*The program will conclude after lunch on the final day.
Eligible Participants
Graduate students enrolled in natural science departments at national, public, or private universities.Undergraduate students enrolled in biology-related departments at national, public, or private universities.

20 participants (A dedicated quota is set aside for students from University Partnership member institutions.)Application Procedure
*The National Museum of Nature and Science does not handle application registration.
Applicants must submit the required documents through the academic affairs office or student services of their affiliated university, directly to the Academic Affairs Division (Faculty of Science) at Ochanomizu University.
Separately from the document submission, applicants must also submit their reasons for wishing to participate via email. This email must be sent directly by the applicant to the email address specified by Ochanomizu University.

Application Deadline: Monday, December 15, 2025 (Must arrive by this date).
The decision regarding enrollment will be communicated by Ochanomizu University to both the applicant and their affiliated university.
Other Important Notes
*This program involves participation as a Special Auditing Student of Ochanomizu University. (Equivalent to completing the "Open Marine Internship (2 credits)" course.) Please confirm with the academic affairs office or student services at your affiliated university whether these credits will be recognized by your home institution.*Participants are required to cover their own expenses, including round-trip transportation to the Marine Biological Laboratory and a daily stay fee of approximately ¥2,000 (which includes meals).
*It is mandatory that you are enrolled in the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakken-sai) or an equivalent insurance plan through your affiliated university.
