Press Preview Held for the Special Exhibition "The Great Mammal Exhibition 3: Classify, Connect, and Parade"

特別展「大哺乳類展3-わけてつなげて大行進」内覧会

The Special Exhibition "The Great Mammal Exhibition 3: Classify, Connect, and Parade" opened on March 16th.

We held a press preview on March 15th, ahead of the public opening. Thank you to the many Supporting Members who attended, despite the event being held on a weekday. We hope you enjoyed the event!

This exhibition features a wealth of actual specimens, including skeletons and taxidermy, making it a truly unique exhibit for the National Museum of Nature and Science. Many of the specimens stored at our research facilities in Tsukuba have been acquired, produced, or restored utilizing Supporting Membership fees.

We would now like to introduce some of the taxidermy specimens displayed in this exhibition that were made possible through your Supporting Membership fees.

The taxidermy specimen of the Southern Elephant Seal (photo left), which was also displayed in The Great Mammal Exhibition 2, had deteriorated over time—such as with fur peeling—due to its popularity and frequent display. It was repaired a few years ago using Supporting Membership fees and was successfully able to join the "Grand Parade" once again.

The Pudú (photo top right) was taxidermied after its remains were collected following its death at a zoo. Since the death of an animal cannot be predicted, sudden expenses are required. Supporting Membership fees provide significant assistance in such cases.

The Okapi (photo bottom right), like the Southern Elephant Seal, is a specimen whose damage was repaired using Supporting Membership fees. As one of the world's three most precious exotic animals, it is a valuable taxidermy specimen, and we hope you will have the opportunity to see it.
