Permanent Exhibition Database

This database allows you to search online for specimens and materials currently on display in the permanent exhibition rooms (Global Gallery and Japan Gallery) of the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno. By searching with keywords or exhibition zones, you can view the names and details of materials, their locations, and images of the exhibits. In addition to basic information about the exhibits, you can check whether the specimen is on display in the permanent exhibition rooms, and see where and how it is exhibited.

You can search the specimens, materials, and other items currently on display in the Permanent Exhibitions (Global Gallery and Japan Gallery) online.

How to Use

Keyword Search

Please enter the item you are looking for. Full-width and half-width characters, as well as hiragana, katakana, and kanji, are distinguished. Please enter English (scientific names) using half-width characters and Japanese text using full-width characters.

Classification Checkboxes

The classification of the checkboxes below the keyword input form is based on the museum’s research organization.

Animals: Vertebrates [mammals, birds, fish, etc.], Invertebrates [insects, arthropods, etc.]
Plants: Seed plants, ferns, mosses; algae, fungi, lichens, slime molds, etc.
Earth Science: Rocks, minerals, fossils, geology, etc.
Humankind: Human history, the formation of the Japanese people, replicas of fossil human bones, and archaeological artifacts, etc.
Science and Technology: History of science and technology [clocks, early Japanese automobiles and aircraft, electronic communication and information materials, materials on Japanese engineers, etc.]; Scientific and physical materials [astronomy, seismology, meteorites, etc.]

Public Information

Exhibit name, Japanese name, scientific name, English name, quantity, type of specimen or material, classification, place of origin, period, provider, description, keywords, exhibition location (map), and exhibit photos
Exhibit Name: The name used for display at the museum. It may differ from common or scientific names.
Exhibit Photos: Taken inside the exhibition rooms. Some photos show the overall view of the section and are not intended for checking detailed information about the specimens.

Keywords contained within the public information will be matched. If there are too many results, please use the checkboxes or the refined search options.
