Activities Related to Microfossil Specimens and Materials from the International Ocean Discovery Program
As part of the International Ocean Discovery Program, joint-use centers for microfossil specimens (Micropaleontological Reference Centers, or MRCs) have been established and are operating in 16 locations worldwide. The Museum serves as an international joint-use center, one of five such centers established around the world tasked with storing all specimens.
We strive to enhance our collection of microfossil specimens (foraminifera, radiolarians, and diatoms) obtained through the International Ocean Discovery Program and promote further international collaboration through the following activities.
-
Prepare microfossil specimens (microscope slides) and distribute them to overseas centers.
- Provide research equipment and space for researchers who visit to use the Museum’s collection of specimens and materials.
- Lend microfossil specimens in accordance with international guidelines.
Activities Related to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)
GBIF is an international mechanism to collect and make available biodiversity information (observations, literature, and specimens) from around the world. To contribute data from Japan to the GBIF, we have developed and launched the Science Museum Net (リンクを新しいタブで開きます)(opens in a new tab). This online system provides searchable access to information on biodiversity specimens held by natural history museums and other institutions throughout Japan. Biodiversity data provided by Japan accounts for about half of all such data from Asia, with data from Kahaku constituting a significant portion of it, contributing to Japan's presence in Asia and around the world.
