ICOM-ASPAC Conference in Tokyo in December 2009

The basic role of the museums is to promote various activities, including research, collection building and management of materials and specimens, exhibition and education.Many museums are contributing to the community with promotion of scientific studies and releasing scientific data and information of museum collection. Some museums also play a role in attracting tourists for regional developments.

Museums in Asia-Pacific region are diversified in many aspects, such as locations from Far East to the West, capacities, and activities.We are now facing various problems about the management and operation of the museums, and we, as the museum professionals of Asia-Pacific region, should consider the definition, roles and the future of the regional museums.

ICOM-Japan will host the ICOM-ASPAC Conference in Japan from 7th to 9th December 2009. The purpose of the conference is to discuss how we should address to the problems that we are facing now, and to strengthen cooperation between museums of Asia-Pacific region.
