Special Exhibition “POISON”

‘Poison’ is generally held to be something that causes harm to life, including humans. However, some poisons are not limited to being poisonous, but can also have beneficial effects. Of all of the materials existing in the natural world that “have some kind of effect on life”, we name those with positive effects ‘medicines’ and those with negative effects ‘poisons’: in other words, these are concepts created in order to comprehend and use the diverse and complex natural world. Even the substances that are useful to the human body can be poisonous in excess quantities. Additionally, as we can see in allergic reactions, recipients’ differing levels of sensitivity can change the toxicity.

In this exhibition we will examine and explain poisons that exist in every element of the natural world – including animals, plants, fungi, minerals, and artificial toxins – from the diverse perspectives of specialists in the fields of zoology, botany, mycology, geoscience, anthropology, and science and engineering, and the deep research and investigations that they have conducted.
