Official Programs for the Japan Cultural Expo

Through exhibitions at the Japan Gallery, we are going to introduce you to nature in Japan, as well as culture that has become familiar with and shaped by nature. We have arrenged some events in the Japan Gallery that will make you feel a sense of springtime in Japan. We hope you enjoy coming of spring in projected images of cherry blossoms.

Cherry Blossoms: Special Exhibition of Valuable Specimens and Botanical Illustrations

The specimens of cherry blossoms which are collected at Ueno Park and elsewhere by a pioneer of Japanese plant taxonomy Tomitaro Makino (1862-1957), and his student, Tetsuya Kawasaki (1929-2002), who is known as a forerunner of cherry research, are going to be on display alongside original drawings of Kawasaki's Illustrated Works of Japanese Flowering Cherries.

A Traditional Art of Sand and Stone: <em>Bonseki</em>

From season to season, the natural features of Japan display their many faces.
In a time there was no transportation like nowadays or cameras people used Bonseki to show their guest a beautiful scenery at home. Under the following days, you can see Bonseki performance in live at the Japan Gallery.

Spring Concert: The Sounds of the Koto & Shakuhachi

Spring Concert: The Sounds of the Koto and Shakuhachi

We will hold a performance featuring the koto and shakuhachi, two traditional Japanese instruments. Please enjoy spring tunes such as Sakura Sakura ("Cherry Blossoms, Cherry Blossoms") and Haru No Umi ("Spring Sea"), by these instruments.

Come, See, Experience!: Traditional Crafts of Taito Ward

Traditional crafts have been handed down since they emerged amidst the history and environment of the shitamachi area (the traditional shopping, entertainment, and residential districts). Experience artisanal skill as you explore the exhibition or participate in a workshop, where you can receive direct instruction from an artisan.

Spring Festival Teatime

Green tea is one of Japan's traditional drinks. Come to the event to experience delicious sencha (a kind of green tea) and learn how to make a more enjoyable cup of tea along with a Tea Taster from Ito En LTD.(Japanese distributor of green tea).

How to participate Distribution of numbered tickets
(From 9:00 a.m. for the morning; from 12:00 p.m. for the afternoon. Tickets will be distributed in the Japan Gallery's Central Hall.)
We will distribute numbered tickets the same day, in Central Hall on the first floor of the Japan Gallery, from 9:00 a.m. for the morning sessions, and from 12:00 p.m. for the afternoon sessions. Distribution will end as soon as seating capacity is reached.

Lesson: How to Make Delicious Tea

Learn how to enrich your diet with delicious tea through our explanation and demonstration.

Note Content can be easily understood by elementary school students as well.
  • In case there is a large number of applicants, participation will be chosen by lottery. Results will be informed by email after the deadline.
  • Please notice that emails will be sent from the @kahaku.go.jp domain. If you have domain-specific settings (such as spam filters) in place, please make sure to either allow incoming messages from the above domain, or remove the settings.
  • Please fill in all names of those who wish to participate together.
  • You can register for up to five people at a time. Groups of more than five people must split up and apply separately.
  • The lesson is easy to understand for elementary school aged children.
  • Only online application is available. We will not accept applications by phone, postcard, etc.

The Taste & Charm of Tea: From a Scientific point of view

We will have a lecture from Mr. Sato, of the Central Research Institute of Ito En LTD., unraveling the atraciveness of tea from a scientific point of view.
