D VI - VII - I, 19 - 21; A II - I, 17E19; GR 3 - 8 + 15 - 20 = 21 - 27. Body elongate, strongly compressed. Hind tip of upper jaw reaching to or slightly beyond a vertical through posterior margin of eye in adults; dentary without symphyseal canine. Body covered with small lanceolate scales; no scutes along lateral line. Vertebral counts 10 + 16 = 26. Color: body greenish gray dorsally, silvery white ventrally, with a double series of 6 - 8 dusky roundish blotches above and below lateral line in adults (> 20 cm in standard length); distal part of dorsal fin lobe black; anal fin lobe white in young, but often black in adult. Size: maximum length about 80 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-Pacific, from eastern coast of Africa to Hawaii. Remarks: inhabits shallow coastal waters to offshore areas; often entering into estuaries in juveniles.
