  This field guide covers most of the diverse kinds of coastal fishes occurring in marine habitats around Bitung City, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, and commercial fishes available at fish markets in the city. Although the image most often associated with tropical fishes is that of colorful, distinctively marked coral reef fishes, such as the butterflyfishes and damselfishes, many tropical fishes are dark, dull-colored, or uniformly silvered, inhabiting seagrass beds, muddy bottoms, or surface waters. For this reason and because these less distinctive looking fishes usually have a higher commercial value than the coral reef fishes, we emphasized them in this field guide to promote a better understanding of the true diversity of tropical fishes. We intend this book to be used for study, research, and education by not only ichthyologists and fisheries scientists but also by university students and local government administrators.
  Field collections of fishes were carried out in January, July, and October 2000 by the authors, using Bitung Station of Research and Development Center for Oceanology (RDCO; presently Research Center for Oceanography), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) as a base, and supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the LIPI cooperative research program "Biodiversity Studies in the Eastern Indonesian Waters" under the JSPS Core University Program. The preparation of this field guide was partially supported by grants of JSPS-Multilateral Cooperative Research Program "Coastal Oceanography" and the Ministry of Environment, Government of Japan (MOE)-Global Environment Research Fund.

  Buku ini mencakup sebagian besar keanekaragaman jenis ikan di wilayah pesisir yang terdapat di habitat laut sekitar kota Bitung, Sulawesi Utara, Indonesia, dan ikan-ikan kemersial (ekonomis) yang terdapat di pasar ikan di kota tersebut. Meskipun pendapat sebagian besar orang bahwa yang berhubungan dengan ikan-ikan tropis selalu mempunyai warna yang beraneka warna, sebagai contoh yang paling nyata adalah ikan-ikan karang, seperti ikan kepe-kepe dan ikan betok, akan tetapi kebanyakan ikan tropis berwarna gelap, tidak cerah atau secara keseluruhan keperak-perakan, mendiami padang lamun, dasar berlumpur atau di permukaan laut. Untuk alasan inilah dan karena ikan-ikan yang kurang terlihat istimewa ini biasanya memiliki nilai ekonomis yang lebih tinggi daripada ikan karang daerah tropis, maka dalam buku ini, kami tekankan pada ikan ikan tersebut untuk bisa memperkenalkan pemahaman yang baik mengenai keanekaragaman jenis yang sesungguhnya dari ikan-ikan daerah tropis. Kami bermaksud buku ini dapat digunakan untuk studi, penelitian dan pendidikan bukan saja oleh iktiologist dan peneliti bidang perikanan tetapi juga oleh mahasiswa di perguruan tinggi dan penyelenggara/pengelola pemerintah daerah.
  Pengambilan koleksi ikan dilakukan pada bulan Januari, Juli dan Oktoberr 2000 oleh penulis dengan memakai fasilitas Stasiun Penelitian Bitung, Puslitbang Oseanologi-LIPI sekarang menjadi Pusat Penelitian Oseanografi-LIPI dan didukung oleh kerjasama JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Core University Program dan LIPI dalam program "Biodiversity Studies in the Eastern Indonesian Waters." Persiapan buku ini sebagian didukung oleh dana dari JSPS-Program Kerjasama Penelitian Multilateral "Coastal Ocenography" dan Menteri Linghungan, Pemerintah Jepang (MOE)-Penelitian Linghungan Global.
