Piercing-and-sucking 穴あけ吸汁

Rather than chewing and removing large amounts of tissue, the insect penetrates the surface and feeds locally, often leaving small puncture marks or speckled discolorations on the leaf, with variation in size and distribution. This feeding mode is characteristic of many hemipteran insects, including aphids, leafhoppers, psyllids, and whiteflies. In stink bugs and plant bugs, the mouthparts are stronger and may reach deeper tissues. Thrips differ technically in that they rasp the surface before sucking (rasping-and-sucking), but they can produce superficially similar speckled feeding patterns.
