Relicina
echinocarpa
Relicina
echinocarpa (Kurok.) Hale
Relicina echinocarpa is a medium-sized foliose lichen (2-5 cm in
diameter) tightly attached to barks. It is characterized by yellowish green
lobes, 1-2 mm wide, the marginal cilia swelling at the base, the absence
of soredia or isidia, the black lower surface of lobes with sparse rhizines,
and the presence of echinocarpic acid.
The type specimen was found on the Fagus crenata in Mt. Higo, Fukuoka Pref.
Later the species was also found in the sub-tropical forests of Miyazaki
Pref. and Kumamoto Pref. But in the research carried out in 1996 in Higo,
its habitat could not be confirmed. It is highly possible that the species
is extinct.
Relicina is widely distributed in the tropical zone, but this
species is endemic to Japan, and are found in Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa.
