Acroscyphus
sphaerophoroides
Acroscyphus
sphaeropharoides Lev.
Acroscyphus sphaerophoroides grows on exposed rocks in alpine regions
(Pinus pumila forest) but rare in Japan. This species has fruticose thallus
with cylindrical branches, 1-2 mm in diameter. The spherical ascoarps are
embedded on aspices of branches resembling crab's eyeballs. So, it is called
"kanimegoke" in Japan.
Mature spores are exposed on the surface of apothecia and they are dispersed
by the winds.
Besides seen in Himalayas, it is, in a sense, a rare species distributed
in the Pan-Pacific region stretching from Japan to Mexico and Peru.
