About FNMNS Membership

FNMNS
The Friends of the National Museum of Nature and Science (FNMNS) Membership is an association intended to further deepen your relationship with the National Museum of Nature and Science so that you have more questions about natural science and increase your interest in it.
Anyone who is interested in natural science is welcome to join this club, from children who love wonder to specialists such as astronomers and biologists.
Enjoy new encounters with natural science by joining the FNMNS.
Six Benefits for FNMNS Members
1. Free admission to the National Museum of Nature and Science

Members can visit the permanent exhibitions at the National Museum of Nature and Science (Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo), the Tsukuba Botanical Garden (Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki), and the Institute for Nature Study (Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo) free of charge, as many times as they want.

2. Free admission to special exhibitions

The National Museum of Nature and Science organizes special exhibitions several times a year.
Members can see each special exhibition once, free of charge.
In addition, they can see the same special exhibition at a discounted fee on their second or subsequent visits.
*1  Free admission does not apply to some special exhibitions.
*2  The School membership covers up to five simultaneous visitors at each special exhibition.

3. Free subscriptions to the science magazines, "milsil", and "kahaku event", published six times a year (every two months)

These magazines feature familiar science topics and NMNS public relations and event information.

4. 10% discount at the Museun Shop

*1 Discounts do not apply to books and some other products.
*2 Discounts do not apply to products in the Museun Shop during special exhibitions.

5. Discount at the Museum Restaurant, and the Lounge Café.

*Members can eat and drink at a 5% discount at the Museum Restaurant.
*Members can buy some products at a 5% discount at the Lounge Café.

6. Free rental of the Audio Guide for the second and subsequent times

To use the Audio Guide, please show your FNMNS membership card at the Audio Guide/IC Card counter.
When you use the audio guide for the first time, we will attach a sticker to your membership card to prove that you have used it previously.
*The rental fee for the first time is 320 yen.*The admission fees have been revised since October 1, 2019 due to the consumption tax increase.
*This benefit is valid only during the membership period. After renewing your membership, you must use the audio guide once again to be entitled to this benefit.
*This benefit does not apply to Audio Guides for special exhibitions or Tablet KAHAKU Navigator.

Discounted Entrance Fee for the National Museum of Ethnology

FNMNS members can visit the National Museum of Ethnology at a discounted fee (group fee) by showing their membership cards.
However, please note that this discount does not apply to some exhibitions.

To Become a Member (New and Re-admission)

You can become a member through one of the following three procedures. Select the one suitable for you.
Note that the procedure is different for (re-)admission and renewal.

1. Apply at the information desk
  • Applications are accepted at the FNMNS Center (Japan Gallery, B1F) at the National Museum of Nature and Science (Ueno).(9:00–16:30 except for days closed)
  •  Fill out the membership application form (for families, for elementary to high school students or adults, or for school) available at the information desk. Once you pay the membership fee, the membership card is issued on the spot.
  • You can begin using your membership benefits from the day you join.
2. Apply for FNMNS membership without visiting the information desk (by paying the membership fee using the dedicated payment slip)

    If you plan to visit the museum in the near future, we recommend applying for membership at the information desk when you come to the museum.
  • Please keep the money transfer invoice/receipt in a safe place until you receive your membership card.
    *If you have not yet received your new membership card after completing the procedure, contact the FNMNS Center before visiting the museum.

3. Apply for the FNMNS membership without visiting the information desk (by paying the membership fee after your application made by email is accepted)

Only when a member other than a School member (re)applies to become a member, that member can send us the application email containing the necessary items for membership application in advance and then pay the membership fee using an electronic payment/transfer invoice available at the Japan Post Bank, the post office or from a Japan Post Bank ATM.

How to Renew your Membership

We send a Notice for Renewal to members at the beginning of the month in which their membership will expire. We enclose a Guide for Membership to the FNMNS, which includes a dedicated payment slip, with this leaflet.

  1. Please show your membership card every time you wish use your member benefits.
  2. We do not accept changes to details such as the membership category, members, or the number of family members during the membership period.
  3. We do not refund the paid membership fee for any reason.
  4. We do not reissue membership cards. You must redo the application procedure.
  5. Please note that we deliver milsil, kahaku event, membership cards and other items only to addresses in Japan.
