Institute for Nature Study
The Institute for Nature Study, while located in the heart of Tokyo, has evergreen broad-leaved trees on its grounds. 1,080 plant species, 2,100 insect species, and 130 species of birds have been observed on the approximately 20 hectares of land. Researchers who are experts in the field of ecology conduct research at the Institute and at other locations, focusing mainly on outdoor surveys.

Within the Institute, periodic timber cruises, as well as surveys of imported plants and phenology studies of organisms, are conducted. Statistical data has been collected for several years on the habitats of rare animals. These research activities are of great significance from the viewpoint of conservation biology because they provide a better understanding of changes in organisms that live in urban green belts and the mechanism behind those changes.
