Introduction

The British Museum curates one of the world’s most comprehensive ancient Egyptian collections and has conducted in-depth studies of mummified human remains. And this is the result of this research that is presented in this exhibition featuring six mummified individuals. With an official responsible for managing a wealthy estate, a priest from a long-established and prestigious family, a married woman, a young child, and two others, these mummified people vary in age at time of death, gender, social standing, and the era in which they lived. What were their lives like and how were these individuals embalmed to be preserved till today?

Imagery techniques including CT scanners and high-resolution visualizations have enabled to shed light on these individuals and provide new insights into their state of health or how they were mummified. In addition to such outcomes of scientific research, objects from the British Museum collection are showcasing the lifestyles and beliefs of their times.
