Atherinomorus species

D IV - VI - I,9 - 11; A I,12 - 16; P1 14 - 17; LR 38 - 41; LGR 19 - 23. Body deep, compressed. Mouth large, upper jaw reaching to or slightly beyond a vertical through front margin of pupil; ascending process of premaxilla short and broad; dentary not elevated posteriorly; preopercle notched. Anus at or little anterior to pelvic fin tips. Hind margin of lateral scales entire. Color: greenish gray dorsally; a broad (1 scale width or less) silvery longitudinal band on side; one or two rows of dark spots usually present below midlateral band. Size: maximum length about 14 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-West Pacific, from South Africa to Indonesia. Remarks: although the present species closely resembles Atherinomorus lacunosus, the former differs from the latter in having narrow lateral band (1.5 scale width in the latter).
