D 60-75; A 50-62.

Body elongate, strongly compressed. Snout short. Mouth small, not hooked but slightly curved, beyond anterior margin of lower eye. Both eyes on right side of head, with a short tentacle each; interorbital space very narrow. Caudal fin completely connected with dorsal and anal fins, without notch; first dorsal-fin ray not enlarged; pectoral fins on both sides of body well developed; pelvic fins short, free from anal fin. Scales ctenoid. Color: eyed side of body light brown with 10-11 dark simple or double vertical bars, wider than pale interspaces; caudal fin of eyed side blackish with whitish spots; eyeless side of body whitish. Size: maximum length 15 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, from Red Sea to Malaysia, north to China, south to Australia. Remarks: inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow coastal waters.
