Body elongate, subcylindrical, covered with ctenoid scales; first pelvic-fin ray normal, not thickened club-like structure; swimbladder with 3 rudimentary anterolateral extensions; vertebrae 13-14 + 4-7 + 14-16 (total 34). Color: body silvery with scattered dark brown elongate blotches on the sides. Size: maximum SL about 30 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: from Delagoa Bay (South Africa) east to southern Japan and Philippines. Remarks: occurs in inshore coastal waters, commonly in embayments on silty bottoms; depth range 0-60 m. Juveniles have been known to burrow in the sand.
