D X, 16-18; A III, 7; P1 16-18; P2 I, 5; LLp 37-43. Body elongate; its depth 2.4-3.1 in SL.

No papillae on edge of orbit. Subopercular and interopercular margins serrated. Third dorsal-fin spine prolonged in females, extremely elongate in males. Caudal fin lunate; lobes often prolonged in males. Pelvic fins not reaching a vertical through anal fin origin in females, but extending well beyond in males. Color: females with orange body; each scale with a yellow spot; a violet-edged band from lower part of eye to pectoral-fin base. Males with fuchsia body; each scale with an orange spot; a large orange blotch on dorsoposterior pectoral fin. Size: maximum length 15 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, from east coast of Africa to the Caroline Islands and Fiji, including southern Japan and the Tasman Sea. Remarks: found in shallow reefs at depths of 2-40 m.(Hiroyuki Motomura)
