Body moderately elongate; body depth 2.7-3.1 in SL. Head length 2.5-2.7 in SL. Posteroventral preopercular margin with enlarged serrae. Upper margin of opercle slightly concave. Caudal fin truncate to emarginate. Interspinous dorsal-fin membranes not incised. Pectoral fin length shorter than longest pelvic-fin ray length, 1.7-2.3 in head length. Pelvic fin length 1.6-2.2 in head length. Lateral body scales ctenoid, with numerous auxiliary scales. Color: body and fins purplish gray to brownish gray, with brown to golden-brown dots on head and wavy longitudinal lines on dorsal body. Margin of spinous portion of dorsal fin narrowly blackish. Size: maximum length 73 cm. Distribution: distributed in the northern Indian Ocean and the western central Pacific Ocean, from northeast coast of Africa east to the Solomon Islands, including Taiwan and New Guinea. Remarks: usually found on offshore banks at depths of 24-90 m. Feeds on a variety of small fishes and crustaceans.(Hiroyuki Motomura)
