Body elongate, slightly compressed posteriorly. Interorbital space narrow, its width 6.4-7.9 in head length. Upper posttemporal spine simple. Upper opercular spine without a strong median ridge. Occipital pit present, but not deep. Pretympanic spine absent. Ridge on anterior part of lacrimal with a pointed tip. Color: body color variable, dark reddish to grayish, strongly mottled with dark brown. Size: maximum length 17.6 cm SL. Distribution: widely distributed in the northen Indian Ocean (reported from Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and the western Pacific Ocean (southern Japan to Indonesia). Remarks: occurs in shallow rocky and coral reefs to depths of 60 m.
