Body oblong, compressed. Supraocular tentacles poorly developed or absent. All pectoral fin rays unbranched. Ctenoid scales covering on flank. Color: body with numerous brown to brownish red bars of variable width, those on caudal peduncle narrow and irregular. A brownish red spot, subequal in size to pupil, on lower opercle. Soft-rayed portion of dorsal fin, and anal and caudal fins translucent with small brownish red spots scattered on rays. Pelvic fin blackish. Size: maximum standard length about 16 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, from South Africa east to Indoensia and northern Australia. Remarks: occurs on deep reefs.
