Teeth not fully fused to form plates; upper jaw with 3-6 oblique rows of imbricate teeth, lower jaw with 4-7 rows; single row of 4-5 scales on cheek below eye; median predorsal scales 3-4 (usually 4); caudal fin slightly rounded in juveniles, truncate in subadults, and double emarginated in adults. Color: initial phase mottled dark orangish brown, shading to pale orangish ventrally; base of pectoral fins dark; posterior margin of caudal fin narrowly white. Body of terminal males a mixture of brownish red and blue-green; head blue-green with orange-pink bands radiating from eye. Size: maximum length about 50 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific and tropical eastern Pacific. Remarks: inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs as well as seagrass and weedy area.
