Body elongate. Maxilla not covered with scales. Preopercular margin smooth. No teeth on tongue. Membranes between dorsal-fin spines deeply incised. Two disjunct lateral lines with tubed scales, one from upper end of opercle to last dorsal-fin ray, the other running midlaterally onto caudal peduncle. Color: body dark, but not dense black; head with whitish spots. No distinct spots on body or fins. Dorsal-fin spines broadly tipped with orange or red, bordered below by a white line, then a black band bordered below by a blue line. Pectoral fins translucent. Size: maximum length 8.5 cm SL. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from east coast of Africa east to the Samoa Islands, and southern Japan south to Queensland, Australia. Remarks: shallow outer-reef areas to depths of 15 m.
