Body very deep at origin of dorsal fin, strongly tapering to narrow caudal peduncle. Base of anal fin very long. Body covered by ctenoid scales except for chest with cycloid. Color: body bronze; centres of pored scales in lateral line silvery; fins brownish orange-yellow, dorsal fin tip blackish, anal fin pale with a dark distal margin. Size: attaining to 18 cm. Distribution: western Indian Ocean to western Pacific, including Red Sea, south China Sea, Indonesia and Samoa. Population in the Mediterranean Sea is migrant.
