Body moderately elongate. Single median row of 1-3 teeth at front of upper jaw (sometimes teeth absent); 1 short inner row of teeth on side of upper jaw of juveniles and females. Dorsal-fin origin over or slightly before gill opening. Anus at or near middle of body. Color: body whitish to pale yellowish with a very fine dendritic reticular pattern of dark gray to dark brown; sensory pores on side of body in a white spot; tip of tail yellow. Size: maximum length 34 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, except for Hawaiian Islands and Red Sea. Remarks: generally found on seaward reefs.
