MURAENIDAE Gymnothorax javanicus (photo by Mark Strickland) Gymnothorax javanicus (Bleeker, 1859) Giant Moray V 140-143. Body moderately elongate. Teeth relatively slender and sharply pointed. Jaws not arched, teeth not exposed when mouth closed. Color: body with 3 or 4 irregular rows of blackish-brown blotches and many spots separated by pale interspaces, these blotches obscure with growth; gill opening bordered by black. Size: at least attaining to 220 cm; maximum length possibly to 300 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, including Red Sea, Ryukyu Islands, Micronesia, Hawaiian Islands, Australia and New Caledonia. Remarks: occurring in both lagoon and seaward reefs to depths of at least 46 m.
