MURAENIDAE Gymnomuraena zebra (photo by Mark Strickland) Gymnomuraena zebra (Shaw, 1797) Zebra Moray V 131-139. Body moderately elongate. Teeth molariform, in 2-3 rows on lower jaw and in an almost continuous pavement on upper jaw and vomer. Dorsal-fin origin far behind gill opening. Anus far behind midbody, tail about 30% TL. Color: body deep blackish brown with many narrow, yellowish vertical bands. Size: maximum length 150 cm. Distribution: Indo- Pacific, including Durban, Ryukyu Islands, Micronesia, Hawaiian and Society Islands, and Panama. Remarks: feeding primarily on xanthid crabs but also takes other crustaceans, mollusks, or even sea urchins.
