D VIII+9; A I, 7-8; P1 15-17 (usually 16); LL 27-28; GR 6-7 + 22-25.

Body moderately elongate. Chin with 2 long barbels, 1.3-1.6 in head length. Single row of teeth on both jaws. Vomer and palatines lacking teeth. Second dorsal and anal fins lacking scaled area. Last dorsal soft ray distinctly longer than preceding ray. Color: body pinkish to yellowish gray; a blue spot often present on each scale above lateral line; short blue lines radiating from eye except ventrally; a black spot much larger than eye centered on lateral line below rear base of first dorsal fin; basal one third of 2nd dorsal fin with a broad black or blackish band or a large black spot, sometimes extending onto adjacent back, the outer part of fin with narrow blue and yellow stripes. Size: reaching to 33 cm. Distribution: ranging throughout the Indo-West Pacific except for the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf to India. Remarks: occurring on coral reefs and adjacent habitats; recorded at depths of 1-75 m. (Hisashi Imamura)
