Body moderately elongate. Chin with 2 slender barbels, 1.4-1.6 in head length. Single row of teeth on both jaws. Vomer and palatines lacking teeth. Second dorsal and anal fins lacking scaled area. Color: body pale tan, shading to whitish ventrally, with a dark brown to brownish red stripe from front of snout to below end of 2nd dorsal fin; a dark brown to brownish red spot at base of caudal fin. Size: reaching at least 50 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, ranging from the east coast of Africa to Tuamotu Archipelago. Remarks: usually seen over sand or sand-rubble bottoms near reefs.
