D IV+9; A III, 8-10; P1 16-18; LR 36-42.

Body moderately deep; an elongate scale (axillary scale) above pectoral-fin base. Head blunt, flattened dorsally; upper lip very thick with 1-10 rows of minute fleshy papillae on ventral surface (papillae found in specimen > 6 cm SL). Caudal fin forked. Scales cycloid or weak ctenoid. Color: head and body silvery, olive-green dorsally; a distinct dark spot at upper part of pectoral-fin base. Size: 50 cm SL, commonly 26 cm SL. Distribution: Indo-Pacific. Remarks: found in shallow coastal waters, especially sandy lagoons and reef flats. Marketed flesh.
