Body elongate, laterally compressed. Maxilla without scales or longitudinal ridges. Interorbital region flattened. Dorsal fin continuous, not deeply incised near junction of spinous and soft portions. Last soft ray of both dorsal and anal fins well produced, longer than next to last ray. Caudal fin forked. Membranes of dorsal and anal fins without scales. Color: back and upper sides pale lavender or pinkish; lower sides and belly silvery; network of dark spots on top of head; margin of dorsal fin yellow when fresh. Size: maximum length about 50 cm. Distribution: Andaman Sea, and Pacific Ocean from southeastern Asia to Tahiti and from Australia northward to the Ryukyu Islands. Remarks: occurring over rocky bottoms at depths <360 m. Feeds primarily on benthic fishes and to a lesser extent on crustaceans, squids, and pelagic tunicates. Caught mainly by bottom longline and hook and line. An important market fish. (Yukio Iwatsuki)
