Mangrove Red Snapper

Body moderately deep, its depth 2.5-3.1 in SL. Preorbital bone relatively broad, wider than eye diameter; preopercular notch and knob poorly developed. Posterior profile of dorsal and anal fins rounded; caudal fin emarginated to nearly truncate. Scale rows on back more or less parallel to lateral line, or parallel below spinous part of dorsal fin and sometimes rising obliquely posteriorly, or rarely with entirely oblique rows. Color: generally greenish brown on back, grading to reddish on sides and ventral parts; scales usually with dark centers and white margins, giving a reticulated appearance; specimens from deep water frequently overall reddish; juveniles with a series of about 8 whitish bars crossing sides, and 1 or 2 blue lines across cheek. Size: maximum length about 120 cm, commonly to 80 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to Samoa and Kiribati, north to southern Japan, south to Australia. Remarks: a euryhaline species. Juveniles and young adults occur in mangrove estuaries and in the lower reaches of freshwater streams.(Ukkrit Satapoomin)
