Diana's Hogfish

D XII, 9-10; A III, 10-12; P1 15-17; LLp 30-31.

Body moderately deep; dorsal profile of head nearly straight, snout pointed; 4 strong canines situated anteriorly in each jaw; a large, curved canine present on each side of rear of upper jaw. Lateral line complete and smoothly curved; scales dorsally on head extending to middle of interorbital space; shealth of scales extending onto dorsal and anal fins. Caudal fin truncate to slightly double emarginate. Color: head and dorsal part of body of adults reddish to purplish brown, shading to yellowish on rest of body, the scales rimmed with reddish brown; scales dorsoposteriorly on body with a small black spot; 4 small white to yellow spots in a row along back; median fins with red rays, dorsal fin with a black spot at the front; anal fin with 2 black spots, and caudal fin with a small black spot at midbase. Juveniles reddish brown with longitudinal rows of white blotches and small white spots; fins with the same black spots as adults except an additional one posteriorly on dorsal fin. Size: maximum length about 25 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea and South Africa to Marshall Islands and Samoa. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs at depths of 6-25 m.
