Body elongate, compressed. Head compressed; jaws reaching to, or slightly beyond, a vertical through posterior margin of eye. Pelvic fins united medially; frenum present. Scales cycloid; head naked. Sensory canals and pores present on head; distinct transverse sensory-papillae rows on cheek; a pair of short longitudinal sensory papillae rows just behind chin. Color: head and body olive gray or dark brownish gray; several narrow vertical yellow bands on body in female; head and body scattered with dark-edged minute bright blue spots; mid-anterior part of first dorsal fin with a series of 2-4 distinct black spots tinged with blue; pelvic fin blackish. Size: 10.5 cm SL. Distribution: Andaman Sea and West Pacific. Remarks: found in turbid coastal waters with sandy-mud bottoms; symbiotically associated with alpheid shrimps.
