Snout relatively elongate, pointed; predorsal contour convex at nape, concave at nostrils, straight in between. Lateral line incomplete. Caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded. Color: overall white with bright yellow on upper and posterior parts of body and anal fin; 2 triangular black saddles dorsally, with blackish vertical lines between them crossing body; a black bar through eye and a black band on caudal peduncle. Size: maximum length about 20 cm. Distribution: Indian Ocean, from East Africa to Andaman Sea and western Sumatra. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs at depths of 3-15 m. Seen in pairs or small aggregations. Omnivorous. Chaetodon ulietensis is its Pacific sibling.
