Body slender, moderately stout. Snout long and broadly parabolic. Nostrils small, widely spaced, internarial space more than 3 times nostril width; nasal flaps not forming a tube. Upper labial furrows short. Upper teeth broadly triangular, strongly serrated, lower finely serrated. No lateral keels on caudal peduncle; precaudal pits transverse and crescentic. Second dorsal fin much smaller than the first, its origin slightly posterior to anal-fin origin; pectoral fin tapering distally and pointed; pelvicfin origin posterior to free tip of first dorsal fin. Color: dark gray to grayish brown dorsally, whitish ventrally; all fins with conspicuous white tips and posterior margins. Size: maximum length ca. 3 m. Distribution: East Africa, Madagascar, the Red Sea, Andaman Sea, eastern Karimantan, northern Sulawesi, Philippines, southern China, including Taiwan, Japan, northern Australia, eastern New Guinea, Solomon Is., and Tuamotu. Remarks: continental and insular species. Feeds on both benthic and pelagic fishes.
