Body oblong, compressed; dorsal profile strongly convex, ventral profile slightly convex. Adipose eyelid moderately developed on posterior half of eye. Breast naked ventrally with a small patch of prepelvic scales; straight part of lateral line entirely with scutes (26-38). Color: body silver to silvery gray dorsally, paler ventrally, matured males darker or uniformly black; no black opercular spot; fins usually dusky in adult, but anal and pelvic fins and lower lobe of caudal fin yellow in juveniles. Size: maximum length about 1.7 m. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-Pacific, from eastern coast of Africa to Hawaii. Remarks: occurring in coastal waters, juveniles often entering into estuaries.
