D XII-XIII (usually XIII), 17-20; A II, 20-23; P1 13.

Body elongate. Ventral end of gill opening extending to opposite 2nd to 8th pectoral rays. Dorsal fin slightly notched. Caudal fin lacking branched rays. Color: body light brown with oblique blackish bands on side of body that pass downward and posteriorly on anterior half of body and downward and anteriorly on posterior half; white lines between blackish bands; 2 irregular series of black spots on body dorsally; a large quadrangular blackish blotch behind eye; irregular black lines on head ventrally. Size: attaining to 7 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, including Indo-Malayan region, Palau, Guam, Vanuatu and Samoa Islands. Remarks: found in inshore on rocky substrata in calm habitats, often mangrove areas. (Hisashi Imamura)
