Chin prominent; teeth red, 2 upper lateral ones produced, canine-like; scales enlarged above pectoral-fin base and just behind gill opening to form a flexible tympanum. A groove in front of eye. Caudal fin lunate, upper and lower marginal lobes greatly produced into filaments. Color: body and all fins bluish black. Size: maximum 50 cm (including caudal fin rays). Distribution: widespread in Indo-West Pacific, from Red Sea to Society Islands, north to southern Japan. Remarks: feeding on zooplankton in steep outer slopes of coral reefs to depths of 35 m.
