D III + 24-27; A 20-24; P1 13-15 (usually 14).

Scales enlarged above pectoral-fin base and just behind gill opening to form a flexible tympanum; 2 longitudinal rows of large anteriorly projecting spines on side of caudal peduncle. No groove in front of eye. Mouth terminal. Color: dark green to dark brown with oblique curved orange lines on posterior head and body; black blotches around peduncular spines; caudal fin yellow to orange; a large round black blotches around peducular spines in Pacific population, but apparently as black streaks in Indian Ocean populations. Size: maximum 30 cm. Distribution: widespread in Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan. Remarks: occurring in coral reefs to depths of 30 m. Feeds on marine invertebrates.
