Body oblong, moderately deep and compressed; lateral line well developed, extending posteriorly to caudalfin base. Snout relatively blunt. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated. No enlarged caninoid teeth on jaws. Base of anal fin subequal to base of second dorsal fin in length; caudal fin emarginate. Color: head and body pale with ca. 6-7 longitudinal dark brown stripes, subequal or narrower than pale interspaces; uppermost third one of the stripes short and extends from dorsal margin of eye to a vertical through anterior part of first dorsal fin; fins tinged with red, orange or yellow; in juvenile, posterior part of caudal peduncle yellow with a midlateral black spot. Size: 9 cm SL. Distribution: Indo-Pacific. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs. Randall (2005) placed this species in genus Ostorhinchus, previously treated as subgenus of Apogon.
