Diagnostic characters: Body compressed, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 4 to 9 (usually 5-7)+7 to 10 (usually 9)=12 to 18 (usually 14 to 17) keeled scutes; prepelvic scutes beginning below pectoral fin base or behind it; hind tip of maxilla pointed, extending slightly beyond front border of preopercle, but not reaching to the hind border. Dorsal rays 12; anal rays 25-31; pectoral rays 13-14; vertebrae 39-40; lower gill rakers 18-26.

Color: Body silver, darker dorsally; no dark blotches behind upper part of gill opening; caudal fin reddish.

Remarks: Occurring in coastal and pelagic waters, mostly in bays, lagoons and estuaries. Maximum length 11 cm SL.

Distribution: Widespread in Indian Ocean and West Pacific, east coast of Africa, Sri Lanka and Indo-Australian Archipelago.

Karakter diagnostik: Badan compress, bagian perut bundar sebelum sirip perut, mempunyai scute 4-9 (biasanya 5-7)+7-10 (biasanya 9)=12-18 (biasanya 14-17); scute di depan sirip perut berawal dibawah atau di belakang dasar sirip dada; ujung belakang tulang rahang meruncing sedikit melewati di depan batas tulang penutup insang bagian depan, tetapi tidak melewati pinggiran bagian belakang. Jari-jari sirip punggung 12; jari-jari sirip dubur 25-31; jari-jari sirip dada 13-14; ruas tulang belakang 39-40; tulang saring insang bagian bawah 18-26.

Warna: Badan keperakan, bagian punggung gelap; tidak terdapat bercak-bercak gelap di belakang atas celah insang; sirip ekor kemerahan.

Keterangan: Terdapat di perairan pantai dan pelagis, lebih sering di perairan teluk, lagoon dan estuaria.

Distribusi: Tersebar luas di Laut Hindia dan Pasifik Barat, pantai timur Afrika, Sri Langka dan Kepulauan Indo-Australia.
