EARLY BOTANISTS IN JAPAN

Shun-ichiro Imamura

Geniti Koidzumi

Two botanists, Shun-ichiro Imamura and Geniti (Gen-ichi) Koidzumi, contributed most to the floristic understanding of the Japanese Podostemaceae. Six of the eight species were described by them in 1920’s and 1930’s. Imamura discovered a Podostemacea in Japan for the first time in 1927 when he was a graduate student at Kyoto University. When Imamura heard his supervisor’s talk on Podostemacea, he thought that plants he saw growing near his hometown in Kagoshima prefecture would be a Podostemaceae. Subsequent to the publication of a preliminary paper in 1927, Imamura formally described Cladopus japonicus in 1928 and Hydrobryum japonicum in 1929. He also collected another species in Miyazaki prefecture, but he did not describe (recently it was described as Hydrobryum koribanum). He devoted himself to conservation of Podostemaceae in his later years.
Koidzumi, professor of plant taxonomy at Kyoto University, described Cladopus doianus and other species as early as Imamura, based on collections by Y. Doi, a plant amateur dwelling in Kagoshima. He described new genera Lawiella, Hemidistichophyllum, and Hydroanzia, which were later reduced to Cladopus or Hydrobryum.
