Lethariella
togashii (Asah.)
Krog Syn. Lethariatogashii
Lethariella togashii (=Letharia togashii) is a fruticose lichen,
hanging down from tree barks and is endemic to Japan. The thallus is light
yellowish green with strap-shaped and dichotomously branched lobes. It closely
resembles Usnea but can be easily distinguished by the lack of central axis
and the vertical fissures on branches.
Found in Picea polita forest by Lake Yamanaka in Mt. Fuji and also in Mt.
Akan and Nemuro in Hokkaido. In all cases, the species grows in the coniferous
forest.
